A PhD GA appointment is usually 10 hours of a teaching-oriented appointment in a hospitality undergraduate course and 10 hours of a research appointment. These are weekly expectations.
Eligibility
Students must meet the following requirements to be eligible for a GA appointment in the college.
- Must be a full-time, degree-seeking student in the hospitality PhD program.
- Must have a passing English Proficiency Score: Duolingo English Test: 65 or higher; TOEFL: 22 or higher on the Speaking component; or IELTS: 6.5 or higher on the English portion of the exam.
- Must be in good academic, with a 3.0 or higher overall GPA in the hospitality PhD program. The overall GPA includes all courses completed under the hospitality PhD program code. For incoming PhD students, GAs will be awarded based on the individual’s prior academic accomplishments at his/her previous institution.
- Must have complete the GA application be the stated deadline.
- Current PhD Students: March 1 for Fall term and October 15 for Spring term
- Prospective PhD Students: January 15
- Must be on campus for the entire appointment, which is one week prior to the start of the term through one week after final exams end.
- Must attend the college’s required one-hour GA meeting held the Friday before classes start. All new PhD GAs must complete the fall term seminar held weekly on Friday mornings.
Assignment Process
All hospitality GA appointments are made by the Hospitality Office of Graduate Programs on a semester-by-semester basis. The following guidelines are followed in the assignment process.
Note: PhD students who fail to complete the GA application by the deadlines below will not be considered for a GA position.
- Current graduate students must complete the GA application by the following deadlines: March 1 for Fall term and October 15 for Spring term.
- All prospective students must complete the GA application at the time they submit their admission application.
- All current students who have completed a previous GA appointment must have received a positive GA evaluation(s) by their faculty member.
- The Office of Graduate Programs reviews all GA applications and appoints individuals based on open positions and on the student’s background. PhD GAs will be assigned to teach an undergraduate course by the Associate Dean for Graduate and International Programs.
- The Office of Graduate Programs will email all students assigned a GA position no later than August 1 for Fall term and December 15 for Spring term.
Tuition and Fee Waivers
PhD students on a 20-hour GA assistantship will be given a tuition waiver (up to 9-credit hours) and partial fee waiver. For PhD students who are in their first and second year and are appointed for both fall and spring terms, the assistantship includes a summer tuition waiver, pending Graduate College approval. For PhD students in their third year, all funding obligations, pending successful completion of their GA appointments and successful academic progress, end with the spring term of their 3rd year.
